I know nothing about Waxahatchee (Music Monday)
Johnny Mac shows up 12 years late and has no idea what he's listening to but he needs to tell you about it.
I know nothing about Waxahatchee.
I stumbled across them last week when I was reading some article about Americana music. Next thing I know I’m playing the album non-stop and blogging about the album Tiger’s Blood
.
Apple Music tells me this album is “Alternative.”
Alternative? Isn’t alternative supposed to have loud guitars and a male singer deliberately singing somewhat off-key? Kinda like this?
Let's talk about this whole Americana vs. Bro Country vs. Rock thing.
As I mentioned, the article called Waxahatchee “Americana” which is what I think we call the thing my mom called “Country & Western” (or in her case “Countrywestern”) because “Country” turned into “Bro Country” songs about trucks and beer and five o’clock and beer and maybe a chick and beer.
I’m pretty sure “fish bait, tailgate, Friday night” is an actual Kenny Chesney lyric and don’t get me wrong I LOVE Kenny and I love some good bro-country.
I would have called Waxahatchee’s 3 Sisters “Rock” especially once we get a few minutes in.
You know that country sound Mick Jagger's been chasing for the last 60 years? I swear, I hear it in this album. There's this moment, about three minutes into the leadoff track "3 Sisters," where it hits you. And then again in the verses of "Bored." It's like Jagger's musical holy grail, but Waxahatchee found it first. And Jagger is “rock” right? This is all confusing.
It's like a musical Venn diagram where the circles are all trying to pretend they're not touching. Americana's got this rootsy, authentic vibe, Bro Country's all about trucks and beer, and Rock's just trying to figure out where it fits in these days. And it all mixes well in a playlist of you try, but doesn’t at all if you don’t.
But here's the kicker - this Waxahatchee album, "Tigers Blood," - I've been playing the hell out of this album all weekend.
It's funny how music works, isn't it? One day you're blissfully unaware of an artist's existence, the next they're all you can think about. I guess that's the magic of stumbling onto something “new.” And by new I mean an artist who has been around since 2012 and I discovered their 6th album.
My daughter texted me: You’re so hip that you like Waxahatchee!!! All of my hipster friends like her LOL!
Wait…..“Her?”
I thought Waxahatchee was a band. Is it one person? I don’t even know what I’m listening to.
I know it's only Rock 'n' Roll, Americana, or maybe even Alternative, but I like it, like it, yes, I do
Now if you'll excuse me, I've got an album to listen to for the 47th time this weekend.
