Podcasting is Dead! Are You Garbage?
WILT Wednesday guest host Matt Hevia with some podcast recommendations.
Hey, I'm Matt Hevia, creator of both the USB microphone and the RSS feed, and I'm filling in for John to share some interesting podcasts I've been listening to over the past week or so. In reality, I've worked in podcasting for a while (Cadence13, The Athletic/New York Times) and, these days, I've recently started an audio development company called Eighty Six Media! Check us out and, please, get in touch. Let's work together.
Alright, enough of that. Here are some interesting shows that allowed me to ignore people in the grocery store and while walking my two year old in the stroller.
Raging Moderates with Scott Galloway and Jessica Tarlov
This is a new series, located within the Prof G Show feed, and I enjoy it for a couple of reasons. First, Scott is generally thoughtful and entertaining, so it's an easy listen. Second, I'm a fan of curating a feed with different shows that consistently occupy a day of the week. In this case, Scott's feed features a few different titles: Prof G Markets, No Mercy No Malice, Office Hours, and Raging Moderates (Maybe I'm forgetting one, but you get it). Do I listen to all of them? No, not usually. But not having to subscribe to separate feeds is a nice perk. I like one stop shopping.
Hear Me Out
EP: Podcasting is Dead with Nick Hilton
This is an interesting (potentially polarizing) listen if you're interested in the podcast industry, and even more so if you work in the industry. On the final episode of Hear Me Out (which sucks, I'm sorry to everyone who worked on it) Emily Bazelon and Nick Hilton discuss the state of podcasting. What is podcasting right now? What should it be? What will it become? Will the thing that it becomes make it so it can't really be considered the thing we've always known it to be? You might love this one...it may also make you mad. Lots to chew on.
Are You Garbage
Finally, we'll go with one of my favorite chat shows, Are You Garbage? with Kevin Ryan and H. Foley. No one formats an "always on" podcast quite like a comedian can, and these guys lend credibility to that theory. The main goal of the show is to interview people and use a subjective rubric to determine whether or not they're "garbage." In episodes without guests, they apply the same rubric to questions from fans. That's it. It's simple, fun, and Kevin and Foley are hilarious.
That's all from me. Thanks to John for letting me hijack his Substack. I will be reading a print out of this post, verbatim, at the next Podcast Movement. See you then.
John here - thanks Matt for filling in. For whatever reason in the universe I just didn’t get to listen to “new” things this past week so I reached out to Matt. He’s a fellow Free-Thinker and one of those people younger than me that I will probably wind up working for some day. Sharp fellow. And did I mention Free Thinker. We need more of those in the podcasting industry.
While I’m here, I’ll push this particular episode of Ballot. The “eating the cats” thing has been so much fun.
