Bill Simmons: There are too many podcasts
I can't stop thinking about the stuff The Hollywood Reporter printed this week
I can’t stop thinking about The Hollywood Reporter sticking its head into podcasting this week. As I mentioned in other pieces, I get the The Hollywood Reporter is going to Hollywood Report but two quotes in particular are stuck in my head.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who we all love, and definitely has one of the more popular podcasts. was named as one of the most powerful people in podcasting. Here’s her quote.
Shouldn’t one of the most powerful people in podcasting have the slightest idea of how these things are consumed? This quote sounds to me like someone who shows up one a week to record and never thinks about the thing again. I say that having been around lots of celebrities who would show up once a week to record and then never think about the thing again. That’s a bad quote.
But my favorite thing from THR was this one.
That’s a hot take Bill! Let's visit the Ringer and see how many podcasts they have. Note, I had to make my fonts smaller to get this all one one screen.
I half-ass counted (once) and got 75. Maybe it's 74 or 76. It’s definitely not four.
Anyway, Bill Simmons said, “There’s far too many [podcasts], which means far too many of them don’t do as well as how they’re being sold to advertisers, which means advertisers eventually get less excited about spending money on podcasts.”
