Here's how much I am earning from podcasts on Youtube! (Video Podcasting)
My earnings from the last six months...
Let’s get right to it!
The stats you are looking at are for Daily Comedy News, which is a 7 day a week podcast about stand-up comedians.
A few conceits to my loaded argument.
Obviously Daily Comedy News is terrible, and I suck, so why would anyone listen to it?
My “video” is made by Headliner who do a great job at handing in exactly what I ask of them…and it looks like this (the below is a screen grab) and not a video). It is set it and forget it, and the robot does its job every morning.
Now that we’ve established that my content sucks and my “video” is even worse, let’s look at the zero dollars part of this.
To qualify for monetization you need two things…
First, over 1000 subscribers to the channel. That I have! Malibu Beach House here I come.
The other is either 4000 watch hours in the last year (rats), or 10,000,000 shorts views in the 90 days (and I am definitely not chasing THAT dragon.)
My shows tend to be around 12 minutes long, give or take.
Because my content is terrible and my “video” even worse, I get a lot of drive-by viewers who don’t stay, which I understand because my content is terrible and my video is worse, and those short visits murder the alogorithm, so my “videos” go off to die.
In the meantime, what am I getting for my lazy videos? “Discovery” - I mean, I guess? But is the “discovery” converting to anything that means anything?
This Headliner version of Daily Comedy News doesn’t have the dynamic ads…so I am not making any money off of it that way.
If I did hustle and improved my video, how much money will I actually make from those 1100 subscribers? Probably not that much, right?
That’s not to say nobody is making money. For an upcoming Daily Comedy News, I am checking out a “podcast”which as you know is defined as 6 people sitting around in a fake restaurant while three cameras film. That Podcast episode has over 1.1M views in over 24 hours, so I bet they made some money. Ricky Gervais is the guest.
Consumer-me just ripped the audio from Ricky+5 in a Fake Restaurant using Listenbox.app and I plan on listening to it later while playing Flight Simulator 2024, because staring at 6 people eat for an hour and 23 minutes is not something I have time for, despite 1.1 million people proving me wrong. I have fake places to fly to.
Hey John, shut up, quit whining and improve your videos.
Right now, I record DCN usually 4 times a week - I am very open with my audience that I pre-tape the weekends, and I usually double up on one of the other days to accommodate my schedule. I also ALWAYS hand in episodes (did your podcast skip an episode this week? Why? Did Thanksgiving Weekend sneak up on you?) and plan ahead for trips and pre-tape as I am a big fan of planning and an editorial calendar.
This morning, I will record….unshaven….with a baseball cap on….in a Mets sweatshirt….and sweatpants….in my basement office.
Writing will take an hour (always partially-writing several days worth simultaneously, as some stories need to go “today” and others are better slotted in the future (say the day a comedy special is coming out).
Recording 12 minutes will take 15-20. The edit another 20 or so.
Now you want me to make a video? With my team of ONE?
Do you want to see an unshaven 55 year old man in a Mets sweatshirt and sweatpants and ball cap reading you stories?
I would have to shower and shave (that I can do, and it’s free), then look into the camera which will be all kinds of boring….. and then I guess I should find some legally cleared headshots of comedians (everyone is clearing their clips, right???)…or maybe even some video to make my Podcast even more visually interesting.
Maybe I could decorate my office, get some fake plants or such. Maybe I could get a captains chair and a coffee table and then you can all stare at a 55 year old man in a captains chair with a fake plant tell you Chortle gave a bad review to Ricky Gervais’ new special?
Man, that sounds like a lot of work.
Maybe I should hire a video editor….and then six months from now wonder why my podcast no longer turns a profit? Which mark my words is going to be what all the articles about podcasting are going to be in Summer 2025 when the Gold Rush To Video wears off and the numbers don’t work.
Yes, video has a place. Give me Ricky Gervais and the production team of Sky News and I can probably hand in something creatively interesting. My resume is pretty decent, I’m confident I could do that for you.
Those of us that just want to talk about comedy while unshaven….we’re making money.
Annnnnnyway, I noticed my listens/views/consumptions on Youtube were up a bit…..so you know….”discovery”…..I guess. That’s what inspired this piece today.
My content doesn’t suck. My video does, absolutely. The content doesn’t suck, and I make a living off the audio version. I make no money off it from YouTube.
LISTEN to Daily Comedy News, whoever you get your shows.
Today’s article was written by a 55 year old unshaven man in a Mets sweatshirt sweatpants and a baseball cap.
Oh, I also have to put the outdoor furniture in teh garage for the winter. I don’t have time to spend three hours making a video.
GEN-Z IS GONNA GET BUSY
Hello again to all the new readers. I am trying to make sure I don’t turn my brand into HOT TAKES GUY so I won’t have any major proclamations today (so says First Paragraph John).
