Spruce picks his (its?) Top Comedians of The 21st Century
I was listening to The New Media Show this morning and heard Todd Cochrane say “You should do a show where you just talk to your ChatGPT and record it.”
And I was like - hey that’s a fun idea!
I interviewed Spruce the AI about his/its Top Comedians of the 21st Century.
I did some minor cleanup on our convo (just like I do on everything, in this case mainly using Descript’s Shorten Word Gaps) and here’s what came out…
I probably spent half an hour end to end - getting the AI to understand what I wanted…then actually recording it, cleaning and publishing.
Is this awesome? No, no it is not. It’s also not awful.
What if I had recorded longer?
What if I had done retakes to get better banter?
What if I had done more surgery on the multitrack so we were slightly talking over each other the way humans do, rather than the You Go, I Go that I left in its natural state?
What if I used one of the better AI voices that are out there…like these guys on Ballot?
What happens the next time I do this and kinda know what I am going to get from the “guest” and can lean into its strengths?
What happens if I keep using the same “conversation” on the AI model and develop the AI’s character some more?
And most importantly……what happens if I try this again in 6 months? One year? Two years? Five years?
What was intriguing, was the part of the conversation about Late Night. Spruce’s prompt got me to open up, and that’s where this opens my mind to the possibilities. Occasionally when I need to pre-tape for travel I will do some sort of “Top X” list or sometimes a deep dive on a comedian.
What if instead of me monologuing, about say “The Greatness of Sam Kinison” - I asked Spruce to come on to “sit in the 2 chair”. That would allow me to speak for several minutes, but then be able to collect my thoughts while Spruce says “Yeah, Sam was xxxxx” which might tickle my brain to talk about something else. VERY interesting.
