Sitting on a beach watching Youtube so my podcast doesn't get cancer (Podcasting)
What I'm Listening to Wednesday
I feel like I am supposed to make some sort of Industry Proclomation in these posts, but the truth is things have been pretty quiet. I am quote bored with the Video/Youtube topic, and the new thing there is every day there’s a study showing why you absolutely have to do Youtube or your podcast might get cancer, and then the next survey says not to worry about video.
Look, make a video, don’t make a video.
I am not going to watch your video because I’m sitting on a beach, driving a car, or walking my dog, but I understand there are people who want to watch glorified zoom call - go nuts. Personally I’d rather listen to this every day than stare at this even once.
As John Oliver once said…
So nothing new there. Your podcast will be dead if you don’t have a full video strategy by July 1st.
June has been a weird month, downloads are UP, revenue is UP, and yet I feel like it’s the summer doldrums. Maybe I am overreacting because things have been quiet on the comedy front so I have been handing in “ok” shows on Daily Comedy News this week, although it is starting to pick up thanks to the New York Times getting into it with Andrew Schulz. ( I am unable to embed that one, might have to be a Times subscriber, but here’s a link.)
Congrats to Sam Sethi on getting True Fans into the Apple App Store! I love Sam because he doesn’t just sit around thinking about how podcasting could be better, he actually works on the idea, and even more importantly actually implements them. I really like where TF is heading. Add it to your list of podcast apps you use, and start enjoying the possibilities of Podcasting 2.0
I’ve been in a sports mood lately! The Varsity had on Alexi Lalas for a smart conversation of the current state of U.S. Soccer.
Jamie Rudd is my go to for daily recaps of the FIFA World Cup
I mentioned this one on LinkedIn….on VIDEO FIRST it doesn’t matter that Zack Lowe and Ryan Rusillo sound very similar. But for audio, it took me 15 minutes while half-listening on the beach to notice that it was a three man conversation not two.
I’ve long been a preacher about Vocal Casting - and let me be clear, these were the right guests for this epsiode - but a little panning and a little EQ goes a long way sometimes. But the Ringer stuff has sub-par audio quite often so I am not surprised.
I can’t get enough talk about sports ratings…so I really enjoyed the episode of Deitsch.
And this episode of Jimmy Traina discussing the cost of being a sports fan was really solid. As I have said before, when someone hands me the kets to WFAN New York I am locking Jimmy and Deistch in a studio for afternoon drive….RD can do the serious thing and Jimmy can be the curmudgeon who is annoyed the Yankees game is on Amazon, and I don’t care if they ever actually talk about sports ball. Any time these two appear on each other’s podcasts you can hear the magic. Someone should just put these two together.
Jon Stewart and Trevor Noah are always good together - as they’ve both replaced each other. Fascinating to hear their relationship. Trevor’s podcast is a little uneven, but some episodes I can’t get enough of (like this one).
I will be curious to see if moving to SXM turns this into the a Celebrified version -w which can be both good or bad, depending on the celebrity.
Good stuff from Peter Kafka on Apple.
And that’s that! I have “only” 81 podcasts downloaded on my phone right now, down from over 200 in March. Warm weather, long dog walks, and sitting on the beach will increase your podcast consumption.
Therefore, I propose that instead of all rushing to Youtube, we encourage industry growth by promoting Pet Adoption.
2 billion people visit Youtube daily? You should make a video! (Podcasting)
Let’s start with The Ankler since it came out today, and everyone loves discussing video. My ears perked up when YouTube CEO Neal Mohan said“2 billion people” come to YouTube every day. I would share a transcript but it doesn’t seem available on Apple Podcasts for some reason today.
